Dressing your Christmas Table

Everyone wants their home to look its best this festive time of year, so why not create a table setting that's sure to start the celebrations with a "wow".

As Christmas approaches, many of us climb into our lofts to blow the dust off our treasured Christmas tree decorations. With each box of shiny baubles, our yuletide spirit heightens and the excitement begins. Why not take inspiration from dressing your tree to create a fun and on trend table setting?

Christmas is full of dazzling jewel tones, from that box of Quality Street, to wrapping paper and tree ornaments. Flashes of metallic teal, gold and silver create dramatic pops of merriment. Draw from this gleaming colour palette to make a truly impactful table.

Start with a glitzy table runner. We have chosen a silver fabric to create an elegant backdrop to the rest of our decoration.

For a super simple centre piece that is both cheerful and stylish, take a bowl or vase and fill with a collection of colourful baubles. Remember to remove the hanging strings for a cleaner look.

Combine traditional candles with battery-powered fairy lights. Thanks to LEDs, there is an ever increasing variety of such lights to choose from, including the stunning gold filigree string we have picked to complement our bold teal baubles.

With so many people coming together for a festive feast, many of us struggle to find room for all the cutlery, side plates and glasses. So why not fill a beautiful metallic bowl with your crackers and hand them round at the start of the meal? It is not only a helpful solution but adds to your table decoration.

Pom pom cocktail sticks allow you to bring your jewel tone palette directly onto the plate. Use them to jazz up a dessert and bring colour to a traditional Christmas pudding.

With so much colour on your table, you need to be careful not to make it overpowering. Combine your decoration with simple white tableware.

Christmas entertaining is not just about turkey with all the trimmings. The festival season sees family and friends coming together for meals throughout the day. Here, we have set a table for a shared breakfast to start the celebrations in style.

Red is a wonderfully traditional colour and allows you to create stunning highlights without being gaudy. Introduce red through your tableware, cutlery, napkins and placements. It looks fantastic against white, green and gold, and brings warmth to both wooden and white tables.

Use lush evergreen foliage from the garden as a naturally gorgeous table runner. Holly is best with is accent red berries, but if you don’t have any to hand, thread red ribbon through branches to create the same affect. For a stately feel, combine with candles housed in lanterns. These not only look beautiful but are a safer option for those with children.

Crackers are an essential for any Christmas table but why not truly personalise each setting with a place name card and small present you know will delight each guest. Small gift boxes for trinkets allow you to create a uniform look across the table whilst also adding to the decoration. Use candy canes as additional ornament. This sweet treat is not only stylish but fun too.

Remember to have fun with a red colour palette, it instantly brings Christmas into the home and works well in both traditional and contemporary settings.
