Retro style is style that is consciously inspired or imitative of trends, modes, fashions, or attitudes of the recent past. It generally implies a vintage of at least fifteen or twenty years. For example, clothing from the 1980s or 1990s could be called retro just as furniture from the 1950's also could.
- Try to create a focal point, (not the T.V) this will usually be a fireplace if you have one. But if not you could use a console table with a display of framed photographs, a large statement mirror or piece of artwork
- Try to maximise light wherever possible such as by placing a mirror opposite a window, incorporating glass and chrome surfaces and having plenty of light sources
- Stick to the 60-30-10 rule –60% of a dominant colour 30% of a secondary colour 10% of an accent colour
When it comes to red, less is usually more.
When using red in your design you will either want it to match with reds that you have already used elsewhere in your decor or to act as an accent.
If you decide to go for a red sofa make sure your space can handle it. High ceilings, muted wall colours and plenty of natural light will help tone down this bold hue. A large black and white painting/image placed above a red sofa can give a dramatic look.
Picnics of the modern age are not quite as they used to be. With so much of our food conveniently pre-packaged many have forgotten the art that is packing for a picnic.
Back in Victorian times picnic were wonderful affairs comprising of homemade meals and multiple courses. So ditch the packaged sandwiches and treat your picnic as a blanket banquet.
